Schroeder Hall Gallery opening reception and presentation: “Let War Memorabilia Come Home”

Thursday, September 12 , 4:30 pm 6:00 pm CDT

A photograph exhibit by Dr. Jim Stanlaw, professor of anthropology, in collaboration with Kiseki, a non-profit humanitarian organization, featuring images of war memorabilia left behind by former Japanese soldiers during WWII that were discovered and brought home by U.S. and allied soldiers as souvenirs at the conclusion of the war, will be on display at Illinois State University’s Schroeder Hall Gallery from the fall 2024 semester through the start of fall 2025.

Since 1971, Yasuhiko Kaji, M.D, a Japanese doctor living in Ohio, USA, had been purchasing Japanese war memorabilia with his own funds and returning them to their original owners. In order to preserve his legacy, Project Returned Memories Kiseki was formed in 2020. Kiseki will continue to find a final venue for these items, both identified and unidentified. Through this effort they hope to bring closure to all parties involved.

This event is open to all. We hope you will join us for an opening reception to celebrate this impressive exhibit and to hear from Dr. Jim Stanlaw and the directors of Kiseki about the mission of this project.

The 2024-2025 gallery exhibit is a collaboration between the Department of Sociology and Anthropology and the Wonsook Kim School of Art. It advocates for authenticity and honor for every culture that diversifies and strengthens our planet AND community.
