Geophysical Methods in the Evolving Landscape of North American Archaeology

Tuesday, February 25 , 5:00 pm 6:30 pm CST

As archaeological practices continue to develop in response to changes in technologies and regulations, geophysical approaches are well-placed for the non-invasive mapping and avoiding of sensitive buried cultural sites. However, the collection and interpretation of these data raises both new and old questions about sharing and management. This talk will showcase ways in which these techniques are augmenting archaeological work and discuss current challenges facing the discipline.

Tim Horsley, Horsley Archaeological Prospection, LLC

Dr. Tim Horsley is the general manager of HAP and has almost 30 years of experience integrating a range of geophysical techniques into archaeological investigations on several continents. Following extensive specialist training in these methods during internships with English Heritage’s Geophysics Team and a master’s degree program with the Department of Archaeological Sciences, University of Bradford, UK, Tim received a Ph.D. in archaeological prospection from the University of Bradford in 2005. Dr. Horsley has taught graduate and undergraduate courses in these techniques in the U.S. and UK, and he specializes in developing appropriate field methodologies in new and challenging environments. His published articles also illustrate ways in which these methods can significantly augment traditional archaeological approaches. Further details may be found at www.archaeopros.com
