Artist Reception: “A Girl and Her Long Legs: A Woman Alone, Looking for A Room of Her Own”

Join us for the opening reception of Sheilla (Aisha) Nelson’s “A Girl and Her Long Legs: A Woman Alone, Looking for A Room of Her Own” autobiographical photography exhibition at the Rachel Cooper Art Gallery. The reception with refreshments will take place from 12:30–2 p.m. on January 30, 2025.
The exhibit features the work of Sheilla (Aisha) Nelson, a Ph.D. student in English pursuing a graduate certificate in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Illinois State University. Nelson explores through hair in various stages of growth and styles, the complexities of cross-national identity between Ghana and the U.S. This exhibition serves as a testament to the artist’s experiences as a Black and African woman navigating multiple identities and cultural backgrounds.
The exhibit is free and open to the public during gallery hours from 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, between January 27 and March 6, 2025.
