Event Description

Please join the Department Of Philosophy in attending the Assistant Professor Job Search Candidate Talk.  Lee-Ann Chae will be presenting “Hoping For Peace” on Thursday, February 1, 2018 beginning at 5:00 p.m. in STV 401A.

Abstract:

Given the world as it is, it seems exceedingly improbable that we might ever achieve world peace. Nonetheless, I argue that we should hope for peace. On the view I defend, hoping for peace is an exercise of our agency that not only shapes the scope of our activities, but also gives our activities a meaning they wouldn’t otherwise have had. In acting on our hope, we reach out towards a possible future, and draw the value of that possible future into what we are doing now. And so hopes for peace give us a way to live meaningful lives in a bloody world.
