Beyond Talk: Innovative DEIA Practices for Creating and Sustaining Inclusive Learning Environments

Wednesday, May 25th
9:00 am - 12:00 pm
Registration is required

Event Description

Participants will engage in discussions around “active” diversity, equity, inclusion, and access strategies. Through a series of hands-on and collaborative activities, participants will reflect on their current DEIA practices, learn strategies for promoting cross-cultural understanding and mutual respect, and design an inclusion toolkit. The inclusion toolkit will consist of a combination of faculty created resources that can be used within a classroom setting to support the academic success of marginalized students. Items in the toolkit may include a combination of the following: a set of classroom norms and shared definitions around DEIA, a personalized welcome letter or video to students, inspirational message boards that promote DEIA, inclusive and accessible course syllabi, equitable class policies, and/or a class repository of diverse readings and resources for students. Registration is required by May 20th.

Artifact: Participants will develop an inclusion toolkit.

Eligible participants will receive a $300 stipend for successfully completing this course. Note: participants may sign up for only one Teaching Scholar-in-Residence workshop per Summer Institute.

This workshop falls under the AAC&U High-Impact Educational Practice of Collaborative Assignments and Projects.

If you will need special accommodations, please contact the event organizer.
