Conceptual Foundations of Free Speech and Academic Freedom: Interactive workshop with Lara Schwartz of PEN America

This interactive workshop is designed to introduce faculty, staff, and administrators to the legal framework of the First Amendment, principles of free speech and academic freedom, and unprotected speech such as harassment or threats. Includes information on the evolving nature of the case law around academic freedom and the real challenges universities face in trying to uphold free speech, academic freedom, diversity, equity, and inclusion. Participants will leave with a framework for approaching issues of speech on campus as we approach election season.  Registration is required. 

Intended Audience: Faculty, Staff, Course Instructors, and Graduate Students with teaching responsibilities.
