Event Series Event Series: Early Career Learning Community

Early Career Learning Community

Wednesday, March 26 , 12:00 pm 1:00 pm CDT

The Center for Integrated Professional Development’s Early Career Learning Community offers course instructors in their first through third years of service at ISU a combination of professional development and peer support. Join us for a series of engaging conversations on teaching, learning, and thriving in academia.

For spring 2025, the focus will be on the book Creating Self-Regulated Learners, by Linda B. Nilson. This book offers suggestions to help students develop the skills and dispositions necessary for deep, independent, and lasting learning. Nilson provides strategies for students to reflect on, monitor, and improve their learning skills, with suggestions for integrating these practices throughout the semester.

Session I- In this first session, we will discuss self-regulated learning and how it enhances learning. Participants will explore strategies to implement at the start of the semester to set as a foundation for learning. We will share strategies for reading and actively engaging with lectures.

Session 2: This session will focus on exams, assignments and projects and how students can reflect on and monitor their learning. We will discuss ways to encourage students to take ownership of their learning, increase their awareness of effective learning practices, and improve their academic performance.

Session 3: As we wrap up the book, we will learn about ending the semester so students leave with a reflection of their learning progress and personal growth. Additionally, we will discuss grading practices and ways to incorporate the ideas you learned from the book into your courses. Registration is Required.
