Effective Research Mentoring for Student Success

Monday, June 6th
9:00 am - 11:30 am
Registration is required

Event Description

Working with student researchers can be highly rewarding, but few instructors receive training on how to be research mentors. This workshop series utilizes evidence-based strategies to help instructors develop their mentoring skills. Effective mentoring requires intentional planning, relationship building, and reflection.  Evidence-based mentoring practices establish and maintain challenging expectations while supporting the “whole student” and sustaining a sense of achievement among students.

This interactive workshop draws on CIMER’s (Center for the Improvement of Mentored Experiences in Research) Entering Mentoring curriculum and theories and practices of “critical mentoring” scholarship to help participants develop their own approaches to mentoring. This workshop provides ample resources and the opportunity to reflect, plan, and create mentoring tools and strategies for novice and experienced mentors. Registration is required by June 2nd.

Artifact: Participants will create a research agreement/contract or a mentoring plan.

Eligible participants will receive a $300 stipend for successfully completing this course. Note: participants may sign up for only one Teaching Scholar-in-Residence workshop per Summer Institute.

This workshop falls under the AAC&U High-Impact Educational Practice of Undergraduate Research.

If you will need special accommodations, please contact the event organizer.
