English Department Distinguished Alumni Ceremony and Luncheon
The Department of English will host its fourth annual Distinguished Alumni Award ceremony and luncheon on Sunday, October 22, at 11:30 a.m. in the Founders Suite at the Bone Student Center. Honorees selected by the English Studies Advisory Board include Dr. Carol Clarke and Mr. Mark Hellner.
• Carol Rose Clarke earned her PhD at ISU in 2000 after defending her dissertation, “Crossings, Crosses, the Whispering Womb, and Daughters under the Drum: The Poetry of Phillis Wheatley and Selected Caribbean Women Writers, with Implications for a Pluralistic Pedagogy.” Dr. Clarke is the Vice President of Academic Affairs at The Mico University College in Kingston, Jamaica. In 2014, Dr. Clark was appointed interim President of The Mico, the first woman to be appointed to the top post at the over 170-year-old institution.
• Mark Hellner earned the B.S. in English at ISU in 1973 and the J.D. at the University of Illinois in 1977. Mr. Hellner is the Executive Director of the Center for Disability & Elder Law, which provides legal services to low income residents of Cook County, Illinois who are either elderly or who have permanent disabilities. Mark joined CDEL in November of 2012 after 25 years in private practice. He was a partner at Schwartz & Freeman before establishing his own firm. He has also served as General Counsel of the Illinois Department of Revenue and since 2008 has taught a State and Local Tax course at the University of Illinois College of Law. Mark was a CDEL volunteer while in private practice. He first volunteered at CDEL in 1986.
Professor Emerita Lucia Getsi will introduce Dr. Clarke at the ceremony. Alumna & Board member Leslie Bertagnoli will introduce Mr. Hellner.
