Circus Nightmares:  Ghoulish Remnants from a Tragic Past

October 1 through October 31, 2021
Milner Library, Floor 2

Items in this exhibit on Floor 2 of Milner Library revolve around horrible tragedies involving The Great Wallendas, Karl and Helen, including a circus fire in 1944 and two dangerous falls. Relics on display from these catastrophes include a flag and seating from the circus fire, letters and transcript of a radio show done with Karl and Herman Wallenda after the calamity in Detroit, and sections of the balance pole Karl used on his final, fateful walk. Find more frightful materials on display in Special Collections through October 31 including two pieces of circus wardrobe and a life-sized Frosty Little, a Boss Clown with Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus.
