Exhibit: Raising Awareness Sexual & Intimate Partner Violence
April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month in the United States. The goal of this month is to raise awareness about sexual violence, as well as to educate communities about the realities of these crimes and focus on prevention techniques. This special exhibition begins today at Milner Library and will run through April 20th.
In alignment with the goal of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, students in Professor Shelly Clevenger’s Criminal Justice Sciences 342 Victimology class were asked to create a piece of art relating to this issue using a child’s toy. The piece the students created expresses a fact about sexual assault, intimate partner or family violence (as many incidents of sexual violence occur within the context of an intimate partner or familial relationships), its victims, their pain or suffering and/or prevention. With their art piece, the students also have included a brief factual statement about subject they are portraying, which will appear alongside the item in the display. The goal of this exhibit is to disseminate information about the topic while raising awareness and creating a dialogue within the community about sexual and intimate partner violence.
Please join the students from Professor Shelly Clevenger’s CJS 342 class for a reception on at 5 p.m. Thursday April 20. Brief remarks will be made at 5:15 p.m. and the students will comment on their work.
