January 19 – Family, Faith, Food: The Midwest Food Bank Model to Fight Hunger
From the first days on the family farm in 2003, Midwest Food Bank has partnered with the community to provide food and supplies to those in need. The unique mission and operational model propelled the growth to serve 2,100 food pantries and nonprofit partners across 12 locations in the U.S., Haiti, and East Africa today. Midwest Food Bank celebrates 20 years of community partnership in 2023. This session shares the history, growth, and the community impact that one family’s legacy and countless volunteers have made on food insecurity

January 26 – A Person With Food Has Many Problems; A Person With No Food Has Only One
Throughout the world, except in time of war, people with money have food. Unfortunately, in much of the world extreme poverty is the norm, and hunger is rampant. Using experiences with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Farmer-to-Farmer endeavors in Asia and Africa, Dr. Rick Wills will share ways USAID is working to improve the lives of persons in developing countries. Discover how an ISU Ag course – Resources, Food and Society: A Global Perspective – brings awareness of the problems of food equality from a local to a global
perspective to students across campus.

February 2 – Farm, Food and Community Development: A Roadmap to Food Security
Changing the landscape of the current food system and creating access to fresh healthy foods for all, while ensuring fair pricing for farmers growing the food, are ongoing challenges. Discover how community-led, grassroot efforts are helping to build more sustainable food systems, utilizing farmers, food banks, restaurants, and other community partners. What role does growing specialty crops play in providing much needed food access? How do market development, advocacy, policy reform, and training factor into these endeavors?
