FOSSIL CAPITAL AND REVOLUTIONARY AFFECT ON NATURAL GAS AND POLITICAL FANTASY IN BOLIVIA

Event Description

Dr. Bret Gustafson, Associate Professor of Sociocultural Anthropology, Washington University

Dr. Gustafson will explore the contradictions within a revolutionary government. Indigenous President Evo Morales leads a progressive Bolivian government which is largely funded through natural gas extraction.  This provokes a range of deeply un-revolutionary impacts such as the displacement of indigenous populations and the degradation of the environment. The question of how these two contradictory patterns can be reconciled will be discussed.
