The Horn of Africa is one of today’s global hotspots. U.S. troops conduct operations in Somalia, U.S. drones fly from Camp Lemonnier in Djibouti, and U.S. naval forces monitor piracy along this critical waterway. The Americans aren’t the only ones with a growing presence in the region; China, Russia, Turkey, the U.A.E., and others are positioning themselves in the Horn as well. This class steps back from current events to learn more about the history of the region, the way modern boundaries have emerged, and the growing international interest in the countries of Eritrea, Ethiopia, Djibouti, and Somalia.
