International Seminar Series: “Higher Education in China”

Date:
Wednesday, December 4th
Time:
12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Event Description

China’s remarkable economic growth brings prosperity in developing its higher education system into one of the largest in the world nowadays. Statistics show that in 2017 there were over 2600 higher education institutions in China with around 28 million students enrolled in a variety of undergraduate degree programs. Influenced by Western education systems and the country’s distinctive cultural and philosophical heritage, higher education in China has many unique characteristics. This seminar aims to provide a brief overview of today’s higher education system in China. During the seminar, the speaker will share her educational experience and foster an interactive discussion on an array of topics, such as different types of Chinese colleges and universities, the admission process and the national college entrance exam (Gaokao), the
interwoven social, political and economic factors that impact the future of higher education in China, as well as the challenges it is facing.

Dr. Taylor Jing Tian is the Associate Director for Asia Initiatives in the Office of International Studies and Programs at Illinois State University. She is originally
from Beijing, China. After completing her undergraduate education at Capital University of Economics and Business in Beijing, she decided to pursue advanced degrees in the United States and received her PhD in Human Resources Education from University of Illinois-Urbana-Champaign. As an educator and a student affairs professional with many years of experience in managing international programs and leadership development initiatives, Taylor continues her passion in empowering future leaders, cultivating global citizenship, and creating opportunities of collaboration between ISU and other peer institutions in Asia.

The International Seminar Series offers the Illinois State campus and Bloomington-Normal communities weekly opportunities to learn about a wide range of international topics. Guest speakers are usually experts in their fields across a range of disciplines who cover a wide array of cultural, historical, political and social topics.

Series events have become one of the most popular internationally focused events on campus and continue to draw ever-growing crowds of students, faculty and community members. Audience members are given time at each event to raise questions to enable a two-way participation and learning.

International Seminar Series events are free and open to the public and occur every Wednesday from noon to 1 p.m. in the Bone Student Center. The Fall 2019 series will focus on understanding contemporary China.

If you will need special accommodations, please contact the event organizer.
