In these sessions, Smith will treat the commonly known, but often resented, phenomenon of language change. All human languages show continual addition, loss and shifting of sounds, grammar, words and meaning, despite sometimes institutionalized measures to halt just such change (e.g. standardized language policies, grammar books of the standard language, education in the standard language, etc.). Discover change in the various areas of language (mostly English) and hear explanations and motivations for those changes.

K. Aaron Smith, Professor of Linguistics, Department of English, ISU
