Opening Hazle’s Closet: A Curated Glimpse into the Personal Style of Hazle Buck Ewing
Thursday, May 9 , 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm CDT
Experience a unique look into the closet of Hazle Buck Ewing. This exhibit is more than just clothes, it tells a story of one woman’s life through recordings from her granddaughter and her own words through the reading of her journals.
Hazle Buck Ewing lived in one of the most exquisite homes built in Bloomington-Normal. She was a friend to dignitaries and embraced adventure as she traveled around the world. But Hazle was also a philanthropist and activist who was determined to bring positive change. She consequently invested in people and programs instead of personal items such as a lavish wardrobe.
For the first time, visitors to Ewing Manor will be able to better understand what motivated Hazle by examining some of her clothing. A special exhibit, Opening Hazle’s Closet, will be featured at the Manor from October 28, 2023, through September 1, 2024.
Six outfits, including Hazle’s wedding dress, will be on display, as well as swimsuits and accessories. The collection reveals that she was far from a fashionista or socialite. In fact, Hazle preferred attire for riding her beloved horses. Her riding clothes will also be included in the exhibit.
Simple in design and pattern, Hazle’s clothing was minimalist in construction, with many items handmade. Her wardrobe reinforced her desire for others to form their opinion of her for who she was and what she accomplished, not based on what she was wearing.
Opening Hazle’s Closet will be available through scheduled tours. Tickets may be purchased at the door for a cost of $5 each. Proceeds will be used for ongoing restoration work at the Manor. To learn more about the exhibit and see the schedule of tour times, go to https://ewingmanor.illinoisstate.edu or call (309) 438-6333. Group tours may be scheduled by contacting Ewing Manor staff. Stairs are involved in taking the tour. The exhibit is partially underwritten by Wisecracker Design & Wisecracker Studio.
