Percussion Ensemble Concert

Sunday, November 3 , 7:00 pm 8:30 pm CST

ISU Percussion Ensemble, under the direction of Dr. David Collier and Dr. Ben Stiers, present their fall concert.

The fall program explores the unique rhythmic and timbral combinations that are possible with smaller percussion groupings but begins with a larger work for percussion – Cross Currents by Lynn Glassock.  Cross Currents is a work for ten players that utilizes wood, metal, and skin instruments—both pitched and unpitched—to create an ever-shifting series of themes and textures. This performance features our freshman percussionists conducted by Graduate Teaching Assistant Sara Eckert.

Black Racer, by Brian Blume, combines exciting unison passages with delicate rhythmic interplay. Written roughly in A-B-A form, its drum-heavy beginning and ending frame a middle section that is highlighted by an odd-meter canon played by two glockenspiels. In contrast,  Knocking on Wood composer Tyler Eschendal creates a piece played soley on woods.

In the center of the program is Six of One, composed for six mallet instruments by Chad Floyd. The concert will conclude with two percussion quartets. Watercolor Sun (2023), by Ivan Trevino, was commissioned by the Grammy-winning ensemble, Third Coast Percussion and is written for the quartet to perform on one single 4.3 octave marimba. The Percussion Ensemble will conclude this concert with Bulldog, a raucous work for unpitched percussion instruments composed by Andrea Venet.
