Event Description

Diana Heney from Fordham University will be presenting “Mental Disorder & The Shape Of A Life” at the Philosophy Undergraduate Event on Friday, March 23, 2018 beginning at 4:00 p.m. in STV 401A.

The question of how to measure well-being brings philosophy into contact with everyday life. One popular hypothesis is that assessing well-being requires us to consider the shape of a life.  This hypothesis is attractive because it fits with the everyday idea of a life story. Each of us longs to be, like David Copperfield, the hero of our own life.  Through reflections on ideals of rationality and recovery, I argue that mental disorder does not close off the possibility of being the hero of one’s own story, or of giving one’s life a good shape.
