Physics Colloquium Series: Professor Stephen M. Durbin
(Physics Lecture Series) Purdue University, Department of Physics
“The Science of Synchrotrons & X-ray Lasers”
X-ray science has progressed from small laboratory generators to enormous national user facilities like the Advanced Photon Source (Argonne, IL) and the Linear Coherent Light Source (Stanford, CA), which have revolutionized our understanding of the structure and dynamics of biological macromolecules, nanocrystals, surfaces, etc. While arising from countless technical advances, the underlying enabling science is founded on special relativity and stimulated emission. This colloquium will discuss some of the ways that these contributions from Einstein (and Maxwell) have led to these impressive x-ray sources, and will give a few simple examples of applications to condensed matter physics.
