“Land/atmosphere interactions on the Earth and Mars”
Global land surface models predict surface exchanges of water, heat, and trace gases such as carbon dioxide. The models are used for applications ranging from diagnosing surface energy budgets to predicting future responses to climate change. Validation against observations remains an ongoing priority. To aid the development and evaluation of one such model (the Joint UK Land Environment Simulator, or JULES) by a broad community, we have set up several case examples on a supercomputer used by the UK research community. These modeling tools are being used as a low computational-cost alternative to full global JULES simulations. We are also working with the ILAMB (International Land Model Benchmarking) analysis environment to compare and contrast the global JULES simulation results. In a side project, I have been working towards simulating the land surface processes on Mars and Mars-like exoplanets with JULES and the Unified Model.
