“Colonial Solar House: A Positive Net Energy Home”
Here is the strategy used to convert a 1929 home into a positive net energy house, dubbed Colonial Solar House: (a) The energy source is solar: photovoltaic modules are used to produce electricity directly from sunlight. (b) Geothermal heating and cooling is used; this is the most efficient way to heat and to cool a home with electricity. (c) The need for heating and cooling is reduced by weatherization. (d) The demand for electricity is reduced by using high-efficiency appliances. (e) The excess energy is used to power two electric cars. Colonial Solar House has allowed me to live for over four years with no natural gas, a negligible amount of gasoline, and a tiny utility bill.
