Event Description

(Physics Lecture Series) University of Missouri at St. Louis, Physics and Center for Neurodynamics
“Chimera States in a Model of Neural Synchronization”

Chimera states occur when identically coupled groups of nonlinear oscillators exhibit radically different dynamics, with one group exhibiting synchronized oscillations and the other group showing desynchronized behavior. This phenomenon has been recently studied in computational models, and demonstrated experimentally in mechanical, optical, and chemical systems. Chimera states are of particular interest in the context of neural synchronization, given the phenomenon of uni-hemispheric sleep and the recent observation of asymmetric sleep in human patients with sleep apnea. I will discuss the observation of chimera states in a computational model of coupled neurons, the identification of the range of parameters over which chimera states occur with different of neural coupling schemes, and implications for models of sleep dynamics.
