POL Brown Bag Lecture: Dr. Mike Hendricks

Wednesday, September 18th 2019
12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Event Description

The Department of Politics and Government will host a brown bag lecture by Dr. Mike Hendricks at noon on Wednesday, September 18, 2019, in Schroeder Hall 203.

Title: “Religion, Resistance, and Resource Extraction in Latin America”

Summary: This study examines how religion and religious spirituality assist in organizing communities to resist local resource extraction. Many individuals utilize the Catholic Church’s spiritual teachings as a moral framing to resist mining to help protect “Mother Earth.” Individuals that  attend church on a regular basis are more likely to have: 1) access to critical organizational tools and information about mining; 2) a higher sense of self-efficacy and collective-efficacy; 3) and a stronger community worldview contributing to broad-based mobilization.

If you will need special accommodations, please contact the event organizer.
