Professional Speaker Series: Julie Derden, 4/3
As part of the Professional Speaker Series, the Publications Unit in the Department of English is welcoming Julie Derden, Teaching and Learning Librarian at Milner Library, to discuss her work in the publishing industry as a freelance book indexer in a talk titled “Indexing Books for User-Friendly Access.”
The event is scheduled for Friday, April 3, at 10 a.m. in the Publications Unit (Williams Hall Annex), and it is free and open to the public.
About Julie Derden
Julie Derden is the Teaching and Learning Librarian at Milner Library, and will retire in June 2020 after fourteen years working with Illinois State University students and faculty. A course in graduate school on Indexing and Abstracting was the impetus for Julie to establish a freelance indexing business, and she has indexed over thirty titles since 2006. She enjoys working with publishing houses, but really prefers contact with the author/authors of a title to determine the audience for the text (pleasure reading, academic/scholarly focus, etc.) and then crafts the index accordingly. After retirement, Julie plans to do more quilting, reading, and traveling (and maybe a little indexing!).
About the Event Series
The Professional Speaker Series invites professionals from all areas of the publishing industry to campus—in person or virtually—to give a lecture on a pertinent topic followed by an in-depth Q&A session with students and interested university and community members. This event is a great networking opportunity in an informal setting and a chance for students to learn about careers that engage their skills in the English and publishing fields.
