Event Description

If we, as educators, want to promote compassion and empathy in our wider culture, it is important to learn empathy skills and consider how to integrate expressions of empathy with our students. This workshop will discuss basic components of empathetic listening. We will utilize practice exercises to promote empathy and accurate listening and discuss how these skills can be translated to engage diverse viewpoints in educational settings. The workshop will introduce skills that educators can utilize for empathetic responses with students — such as reflections, restatements, attending behaviors, open questions to explore thoughts and feelings.  Attendees will also be encouraged to participate in (and debrief) theater-based improvisational exercises designed to focus on the awareness of others’ responses or reactions, listening, collaboration, and trust. A stipend is available for eligible participants.

If you will need special accommodations, please contact the event organizer.
