Talk: Multilingualism and Education through Interdisciplinary Collaboration

Date:
Friday, March 31st
Time:
4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Event Description

Join us on Friday, March 31 at 4 pm, Stevenson Hall Room 101, for a talk by Patrick H. Smith of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign entitled “Multilingualism and Education through Interdisciplinary Collaboration”

Abstract
This talk will introduce applied linguistics as a field inspired and shaped by multiple associated disciplines and as a set of professional practices that, increasingly, rely on interdisciplinary collaboration. We will look at contemporary language-related problems, and how these have been addressed by teams working from different disciplinary backgrounds and with diverse professional responsibilities. Multilingual education is a core area of applied linguistics that offers many opportunities for collaboration across disciplines. Modality, mobility, and mixing are three factors that will shape future collaboration and that motivate the study and practice of multilingual education. The talk concludes with thoughts on the contributions to be made by future scholars and new practitioners with expertise in multilingualism and education.

Bio
Patrick H. Smith is an associate professor of bilingual education and literacy at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His research has explored how Mexican-origin learners use language and literacy in and out of school in communities in the U.S.-Mexico borderlands, central Mexico, and Illinois. Currently he is studying the role of bi-literacy as a generator of human capital in a Spanish/English dual language school. With Chris Hall and Rachel Wicaksono, Professor Smith is co-author of Mapping Applied Linguistics: A Guide for Students and Practitioners.
