Identifying Obstacles to Higher Education and Developing Resources on Campus for Undocumented Students

Friday, February 9th 2018
3:30 pm - 5:30 pm

Event Description

Associate Professor, Dr. Juliet Lynd, Acting Director of Latin American and Latinx Studies, Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures and Associate Professor, Dr. Beth Hatt, Department of Educational Administration and Foundations, will present a talk entitled, “Identifying Obstacles to Higher Education and Developing Resources on Campus for Undocumented Students” at 4:30 p.m. at the University Club in the Founders Suite in the Bone Student Center.

The Committee to Assist Undocumented Student Achievement (CAUSA) was formed in 2016 by a group of faculty and staff aware of the challenges undocumented students face when applying to the university and seeking sources to fund their education, as well as the anxiety that so often arises from the particular pressures confronted by students who are undocumented themselves, are uncertain about the fate of DACA, and/or who have family members who are undocumented. The latter includes the fear of detention or deportation, the pressure to succeed and never make a mistake, discrimination in a variety of contexts, and uncertainty about the possibilities of employment in one’s field after graduation. This talk will offer an overview of the obstacles these students often face, what CAUSA has done thus far, and our hopes for the future.

All faculty, staff, annuitants and guests are welcome to join us at the University Club from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. this Friday in the Founders Suite in the Bone Student Center. You need not be a University Club member to attend. Additional information about U-Club events and activities can be found at our website, http://uclub.illinoisstate.edu/. Continued program support is provided by the Office of the ISU Provost and President. In addition, snacks and liquid refreshments are available at each meeting.
