Book Discussion: Policing Empires: Militarization, Race, and the Imperial Boomerang in Britain and the U.S.
Friday, March 1 , 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm CST
On March 28, the 2024 Robert G. Bone Distinguished Lecture will be given by Dr. Julian Go, who will talk about his just published book, Policing Empires: Militarization, Race, and the Imperial Boomerang in Britain and the U.S. Go’s research discovers that police militarization had occurred since the very founding of modern policing in the 19th century as a consequence of colonial policies. He theorizes this as the “imperial boomerang” in which police have brought home the tools and tactics of imperialism overseas to militarize themselves in response to perceived racialized threats from minority and immigrant populations (see attached poster).
To thoroughly enjoy and take advantage of Dr. Go’s visit, the Department of Sociology and Anthropology will be organizing a “book club” discussion of Policing Empires on Friday, March 1, from 12:00-1:15 p.m. in SCH 103. All are invited—particularly undergraduates and students from CJS and History—as well as all graduate students and faculty.
Milner Library has purchased an online copy of the book that permits an unlimited number of borrowers to have simultaneous access to it: https://i-share-isu.primo.exlibrisgroup.com/permalink/01CARLI_ISU/1vcthfe/alma9921606859905845
If you would like to take a special role in the book club (giving a brief presentation of the book or some chapters on March 1, or meeting the author on March 28 in a small group) please email Dr. Aaron Pitluck as soon as convenient: Aaron.Pitluck@IllinoisState.edu.
