Homecoming ’24 Sociology & Anthropology Alumni guest talk

Thursday, September 26 , 11:00 am 12:00 pm CDT

The Sociology and Anthropology department will be hosting a special homecoming guest speaker, alumna Bunmi Akinnusotu, M.S. Sociology/ACED ’06, who will share her talk, “You Really Never Know: 20 Years of Life From a Person Who Shouldn’t Be Here”.

Join Bunmi in a reflection about life, the planned and unplanned, known and unknown. This will be a deeply personal and transparent conversation about what she has been up to and learned 20 years post ISU. Students will also have an opportunity to share their own reflections, concerns, and ask questions in a safe, non-judgmental space. Bunmi will likely not have a lot of answers but she is happy to hold space for fruitful dialogue and provide encouragement wherever possible.

Bunmi oversees Bloomberg CityLab at the Aspen Institute, an annual convening of mayors and city leaders innovatively solving urban issues. Her expertise lies in the intersection of international relations and organization management. In 2017, Bunmi launched a foreign policy podcast called, “What in the World?” which made foreign policy relevant to everyday people and amplified experts of color. Bunmi was an AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer and fundraiser for the YWCA Chicago and United Way Chicago. Bunmi graduated from Columbia University SIPA (MPA, Urban Policy), Illinois State University (M.A., Sociology), and Bryant University (BSBA, Computer Info Systems). You can also learn more about Bunmi’s work in a recent Redbird Buzz podcast.
