Redbird Table Talk: Why is diversity and inclusion important to sustainability?

Sustainability has become a buzzword for companies, organizations, universities, cities, and communities. But what is sustainability? What does sustainability mean at Illinois State University? What does it mean in our community and across the world?

This Redbird Table Talk is the perfect way to celebrate Earth Day! It will delve into the foundational pillars of sustainability: people, planet, and profit. Recognized in business as the “triple bottom line,” this concept underscores the significant advantages companies gain when they prioritize social equity, diversity and inclusion, and environmental considerations alongside financial profitability. Participants will learn how Illinois State is addressing the three pillars of sustainability, and how organizations and companies can effectively do the same.

Our dynamic conversation will be led by sustainability expert and director of the Office of Sustainability, Elisabeth Reed. Reed has served as the director of the Office of Sustainability for the last four years. During this time, she led the University to develop its first Sustainability Strategic Plan, integrated zero-waste practices into campus operations, and created innovative programming with students, faculty, staff, and community members. Prior to this position, Reed taught in the fashion design and merchandising program at Illinois State, connecting sustainability and environmental/social justice issues into textiles and product development courses, while also developing the award-winning Fix It Friday program. Reed has a master’s degree in fashion design from the Savannah College of Art and Design and an undergraduate degree in architecture from the University of Cincinnati.
