Schroeder Hall Gallery opening and presentation, “Exploring Cuba”

Thursday, September 21, 2023 , 4:30 pm 6:00 pm CDT

Shea Grehan (’20) is a photographer for ISU Marketing and Communications and graduate from ISU with dual degrees in Art – Studio Photography and Geography. His love for travel, meeting new people and cultures, and chasing amazing landscapes led him to Cuba as part of an Honors Program trip in 2019.

Shea went to Cuba with a set of questions in mind:  What gives us a sense of place?  What kind of place is Cuba, and what is a Cuban’s sense of place like? How can I capture this sense of place and share it with others?  He was especially driven by the last question—Cuba is a place that not many people know about, and even fewer get to visit within their lifetime. Shea has captured Cuba through his impressive photography, combined with an immense curiosity and respect for the people and places he visited. Every shot works to inform the other, allowing viewers to piece together and understand Cuban society through the sum of its parts.

We hope you will join us for an opening reception to celebrate this impressive exhibit and to hear from the artist as he speaks about this experience and his works. The 2023-2024 gallery exhibit is a collaboration between the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, the Wonsook Kim School of Art, and the Latin America and Latino/a Studies program. It advocates for authenticity and honor for every culture that diversifies and strengthens our planet AND community.
